Fat Will Not Make You Fat

Enjoy Hearty Meals this Season

You read that right. [Healthy] fats will not make you fat. Studies show no difference in low-fat vs high-fat diets in weight gain or loss. In fact, many “low-fat” foods actually lead to weight gain (and high cholesterol) because of the poor ingredients and carbohydrates.

When looking at weight related to diet we’re going to want to address carbohydrates from sugars and breads and amount of food in our daily diet.

This topic is prevalent in this season because of our bodies natural cravings for increased fats, calories and proteins in these cold, dark months. It’s not a conscious choice, but rather an unconscious, instinctual behavior.  It’s normal to crave warm, savory (fatty, oily) dishes leading up to and throughout the winter season.

When our bodies get the nutrients, including fats, it needs it may have less desire for sugars and carbohydrates, actually aiding in weight loss. Similar to when we are sleep deprived and we jump to carbs and sugars to provide our energy. When we don’t receive the right amount and type of fats and proteins during cold months our body searches for other quick energy sources such as those found in breads and desserts. (When eating a slice of fresh bread – lather it in butter from grass-fed cows!)

When cooking this winter, don’t be afraid of the fats. Here are list of healthy fats to incorporate in your diet:

  1. Fatty Fish – Salmon, herring, sardines
  2. Tuna, shrimp
  3. Nuts and Seeds (Pumpkin seeds are excellent!)
  4. Avocado Oil (Cold or expeller pressed)
  5. Extra Virgin Olive Oil (Cold or expeller pressed)
  6. Butter and whole milk from organic grass-fed cows
  7. Tallow and beef, pasture-raised and antibiotic free, from Zweber Farms

Just as everything related to nutrition continues to be controversial, there continues to be controversy with fats in our diet. Approach fat in your diet by rotating between healthy plant and animal fats. This is general nutrition information. Always consult with your health care provider on your own nutritional needs and care plan.
