After a busy summer with schedules full and on the go, Fall is short lived beauty is a time to slow down, embrace and be present. And with the upcoming holiday season that is full of food and family, this moment is the perfect time to reflect on the connection we have to food and the interconnection it brings to each of us.
Mindfulness is a powerful tool that has become a daily practice of mine recently. Not only in meditation, but also throughout the day. This is helping me gravitate towards what is most important in my life. For me, and humans in general, connection to those around us is a key factor in our well-being, but it’s getting pushed aside in a culture of busy. We all have our individual lists of what keeps us busy. Too busy to stop, plan or be intentional around delicious and nourishing food and people.
Now is the time to reconnect us to our food and to our people. Even more, to allow food to be that connection point to each other. Food is an answer to our yearning for human connection.
As we embark on this holiday season, how can we practice to be more intentional with our food and our relationships? Let’s practice to slow down and savor our connections!

Connecting to Our Food and Each Other through the Holidays and Beyond:
- Mindfulness with people – The holidays come and go in a whirlwind and often leave us in exhaustion. How do you want your time together to look? How can it provide you with more energy rather than stripping you of it? You have the power to create this! Trust yourself and Get excited. Do you want a larger or smaller group of people?
- Mindfulness with food – Start planning your food now! Can you buy sweet potatoes from the farmer’s market now in prep for Thanksgiving, connecting your food to local family and ground. Zweber’s can supply you with meat for the holidays – walking tacos for a fun Halloween meal like my mother-in-law does, chicken for Thanksgiving and ham for christmas! Purchase now from Zweber Farm’s shop or order from their meat selection.
- Meal Making – Instead of venturing into this alone, include your family! Ask your kids to help plan the meal and include them or other family in the meal prep process. Open up for creativity and connection through each step.
- Meal Time – Give gratitude for each piece of food and the hands, lives and energy that went into supplying this supple meal for your family. Prepare table discussion topics ahead of time. You could purchase cards to help lead the discussion or write out a few topics yourself.
- Post Meal – What’s your favorite way to connect as a family? Can you plan to do this after your meal? You could carry your table topics with you. What about phones tucked away now or even for the day through meal prep, eating and after?
